Update:
Since 2014, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has enacted numerous regulations, guidelines, and updates to address the evolving telecommunication landscape. Notable regulations include the Broadband Quality of Service Regulations of 2014 and its subsequent updates in 2022, which establish standards for fixed broadband services. The Cellular Mobile Network Quality of Service Regulations of 2021 similarly set quality benchmarks for mobile networks.
In 2020, the Critical Telecom Data and Infrastructure Security Regulations were introduced to enhance the security of telecom infrastructure and data. These regulations mandate strict security measures for protecting critical telecom data and infrastructure from potential threats.
PTA has also issued various consultation papers and draft guidelines to engage stakeholders and refine regulatory frameworks. These include papers on IP telephony, infrastructure sharing for cellular mobile companies, and mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) frameworks. The authority has continuously updated its policies to accommodate technological advancements and market dynamics, ensuring a robust regulatory environment.
Furthermore, PTA has focused on cyber security, implementing a comprehensive Cyber Security Strategy for the Telecom Sector and publishing annual reports to highlight progress and areas needing attention. Initiatives like the Digital Gender Inclusion Strategy reflect PTA’s commitment to inclusive digital development.
These efforts demonstrate PTA’s proactive approach in regulating and guiding the telecommunication sector, fostering innovation, ensuring service quality, and enhancing security and inclusivity in Pakistan’s digital landscape
